DigitalOcean bets on one monthly bill for running AI agents

Agent Droplets bundle DigitalOcean's managed agent runtime, inference, storage, and 16,000+ tools into plans starting at $50 a month, with a prepaid balance for overages.

Running a useful AI agent in production has become a billing problem. The sandbox, the inference, the storage, the tools: each comes from a different vendor, in a different unit, on a different invoice. DigitalOcean's answer, announced Thursday, is Agent Droplets: one monthly subscription that bundles everything an agent needs, echoing the flat-price playbook that made the $5 Droplet a developer staple.

Agent Droplets build on DigitalOcean Managed Agents, which entered public preview on September 22 with a managed runtime, governed access to more than 16,000 tools, serverless inference, and persistent agent memory and storage. The new plans wrap all of that into two tiers: Pro at $50 a month with a 15% discount on all included agent usage, and Team at $200 a month with a 20% discount. A free trial with $5 in credit and no card required gets new users started.

What the money buys

The discount applies across the stack: compute and memory on dedicated microVMs that start in about a second and pause when idle, DigitalOcean-hosted inference on open models including Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3, session storage, and governed tool access covering code interpreters, browser automation, web search, and web fetch. Bring your own harness: DigitalOcean lists Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Hermes, CrewAI, and LangGraph. There are no seat charges and no limit on the number of environments, and enterprise security (SSO, MFA, audit logs) is included.

Alongside the plans comes an Inference and Agents Balance: a prepaid balance from $5 to $500, scoped only to AI products, that agents draw on once a Droplet allowance is used up. Customers choose whether spending stops at the plan price or continues at list prices. If the balance hits zero, sessions pause at the next safe stopping point with working state preserved in a snapshot.

Why it matters

"Fourteen years ago a Droplet made the cloud something one developer could understand and afford, and a generation of companies got built on it," said Vinay Kumar, DigitalOcean's chief product and technology officer. "Agents should feel like that."

The competitive framing is explicit in DigitalOcean's own launch post: sandbox vendors don't run inference, model vendors don't run sandboxes or storage, and hyperscalers meter everything as separate line items (the post cites AWS Bedrock AgentCore's separately billed runtime, memory, and gateway). Whether one bill is enough of a reason to move agent workloads onto DigitalOcean is the open question, but the pricing is unusually concrete for this market: DigitalOcean estimates a Pro plan covers roughly 235 agent hours or about 53 million tokens a month, versus about 1,000 agent hours on Team.

Agent Droplets are available now in all regions where Managed Agents is offered, per the launch announcement.
