What Is Z Code?

Z Code is a desktop code editor from Z.ai (formerly Zhipu AI), a Chinese AI company that spun out of Tsinghua University in 2019 and IPO’d in Hong Kong in January 2026. The editor is available for macOS and Windows, with a VS Code extension for those who prefer to stay in their existing editor.

The real product here is the GLM Coding Plan, a quota-based subscription that provides access to Zhipu’s GLM model family. The plan works not just through Z Code but through 20+ third-party tools via an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint, including Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Aider, and OpenCode.

What Sets It Apart

Price is the headline. The Lite plan starts at $10/mo, and there’s a genuinely free tier using GLM-4.7-Flash that requires no credit card. For context, Claude Pro is $20/mo and Cursor Pro is $20/mo.

The billing model is quota-based rather than per-token. Each plan gets a fixed number of prompts per 5-hour rolling window, which makes costs predictable. The downside: GLM-5 (the flagship model) consumes 3x the quota of older models, so heavy GLM-5 users may burn through their allocation faster than expected.

GLM-5 is a 744B parameter mixture-of-experts model (40B active) that scores 77.8% on SWE-bench Verified. That puts it below Claude Opus (80.9%) but above Gemini 3 Pro (76.2%). The 200K token context window is competitive with other flagship models.

The OpenAI-compatible API is arguably more useful than the editor itself. Developers can point Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, or any tool that supports the OpenAI API format at the Z.ai endpoint and use GLM models as a cheaper backend. The NPM package @z_ai/coding-helper automates this configuration.
