Perplexity launched Computer today, a unified AI platform that orchestrates 19 models including Claude Opus and GPT-5.2 to handle multi-step projects. It costs $200/month and the ambition is enormous.
Perplexity shipped something big today. Computer is a new product category for the company: a general-purpose AI worker that strings together 19 different models to handle complex, multi-step projects from start to finish.
The tagline on the landing page: “Computer works. Everything AI can do, Perplexity Computer does for you.”
That’s a bold claim. Here’s what’s actually behind it.
What It Does
Computer is a task orchestration layer. You describe what you want done, and the system breaks it into subtasks, assigns each to the best-suited model, and runs them in sequence or parallel. It can chain together research, writing, code generation, image creation, data analysis, and web browsing into a single continuous workflow.
The example tasks on the product page tell you what Perplexity thinks the use cases are:
- “Build an interactive US election web app (1789-2024) with state/county data, animations, and sidebar stats.”
- “Monitor top 20 AI stocks via SEC, jobs, GitHub, and sentiment. Alert weekly anomalies and urgent buy/sell opportunities.”
- “Build a Rust-based ASCII editor with a Figma-like UI including drawing tools, undo/redo, and direct copy paste.”
These aren’t chat prompts. They’re project briefs. Computer is designed to run for hours or months on a single task, checking in with you when it needs decisions.
The Multi-Model Architecture
This is the technical bet that separates Computer from competitors. Instead of routing everything through a single model, Perplexity built a routing layer that uses Claude Opus as an orchestrator. Opus reads your request, breaks it into pieces, and dispatches each piece to the model best suited for it.
The model roster, according to launch reporting:
- Claude Opus for orchestration and complex coding
- Gemini for deep research tasks
- GPT-5.2 for long-context recall
- Grok for lightweight, fast queries
- Nano Banana for image generation
- Veo 3.1 for video generation
Nineteen models total. The idea is that no single model is best at everything, so Computer picks the right tool for each step of a workflow. If your project needs research, then code, then a chart, then a summary email, each phase might hit a different model.
Pricing
Computer requires Perplexity’s Max subscription at $200/month. That includes 10,000 monthly credits. All users get a 20,000 credit bonus that’s valid for 30 days.
Pro subscribers ($20/month) don’t have access yet. Perplexity says Pro and Enterprise support are coming.
At $200/month, Computer is priced in the same tier as ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max. The difference: those subscriptions give you one model with extended limits. Perplexity gives you 19 models behind one interface.
Whether that justifies the price depends entirely on whether the orchestration actually works well in practice. Multi-model routing is a hard engineering problem. When it works, you get the best of each model. When it fails, you get inconsistency and wasted tokens.
Why This Matters for AI Coding
The example tasks on Computer’s landing page are heavy on code: building web apps, creating editors, monitoring systems. Perplexity is clearly positioning this as a coding tool, not just a research assistant.
That puts it in direct competition with Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Devin. The pitch is that Computer can handle the full lifecycle: research the problem, write the code, test it, deploy it, and monitor it. All from one prompt.
We haven’t tested it yet. When we do, we’ll add a proper review.
The Bigger Picture
Perplexity started as a search engine. Then it became a research tool. Now it wants to be a general computing platform.
The timing isn’t accidental. This drops the same week Perplexity announced its $750 million Microsoft Azure deal and its Samsung Galaxy S26 integration as a voice assistant. The company is moving fast and spending big to become a platform, not just a product.
Computer is available now at perplexity.ai/computer for Max subscribers.
