Baselayer raises $35M and launches identity checks for AI agents
Baselayer says its new Know Your Agent suite links an AI agent to the business and operator authorizing a transaction.
Baselayer announced a $35 million Series A on September 22. M13 led the round, with Torch Capital, Picus Ventures, Afore Capital, and Matt Thompson of Socure participating. At the same time, Baselayer introduced an Agentic Identity Suite built around a concept it calls Know Your Agent, or KYA.
What Know Your Agent checks
The product is meant to answer three questions before software completes a transaction: which agent is acting, which business or person it represents, and what that agent is allowed to do. Baselayer's product page shows credentials that connect a verified business to an authorized person and an agent operator. It also describes scoped disclosure, so a counterparty can receive only the identity details needed for a transaction.
Baselayer says the suite builds on its existing business identity and risk platform. In its announcement, the company says its network reaches more than 2,300 financial institutions and payments companies. That reach is a company claim; the announcement does not provide independent usage data for KYA itself.
Why this matters for agent transactions
An AI agent can initiate work on someone's behalf, but a merchant or bank still needs to decide whether to trust the instruction. Existing checks generally identify people or businesses. Baselayer's proposal adds a way to connect the software actor to those identities and to a stated authorization.
The release describes the product's design and funding, not measured fraud reduction from KYA. Developers building purchasing or payment agents should treat identity, authorization scope, and a record of the agent's actions as separate requirements. Whether Baselayer's credential model becomes a common standard will depend on adoption by counterparties as well as the underlying technology.
