Anthropic Removed Claude Code From the $20 Pro Plan for a Day, Then Backtracked
Anthropic quietly updated its pricing page on April 21 to remove Claude Code from the $20 Pro plan, said nothing about it, got caught, and reversed within hours. It called the whole thing an A/B test.
On April 21, Anthropic updated claude.com/pricing to remove Claude Code from the $20/month Pro tier. No announcement. No changelog entry. No email to subscribers. The change showed up as a screenshot on Reddit and X, and from there spread quickly.
The support documentation was updated to match: pages that previously read “Using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan” changed to reference only “Max plan.” Two tiers, starting at $100/month, were listed as the access path.
The backlash was fast. By April 22, Anthropic had reversed course. Claude Code is back in the Pro column on claude.com/pricing, and the documentation has been restored.
What Anthropic Said
Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s Head of Growth, posted an explanation on X while the reversal was in progress: “For clarity, we’re running a small test on ~2 percent of new prosumer signups. Existing Pro and Max subscribers aren’t affected.”
He later acknowledged the communication failure: “was a mistake that the logged-out landing page and docs were updated for this test.” In other words, an internal pricing experiment accidentally updated the public-facing pricing page and all the documentation for it.
The same post promised that future changes to existing subscription access would come “from us, not a screenshot on X or Reddit.” A reasonable commitment to make, though the delivery was ironic given the medium.
Why This Is Happening
The underlying pressure is real. Anthropic’s subscription plans were designed for a different usage pattern than what agentic tools like Claude Code actually produce. A developer running Claude Code through a complex coding session burns significantly more compute than someone using the web app for occasional questions. As Avasare put it, “usage has changed a lot and our current plans weren’t built for this.”
This isn’t the first adjustment. On April 4, Anthropic blocked third-party agentic tools including OpenClaw from accessing Pro and Max subscriptions through unofficial API access. Users of those tools had to switch to direct API billing.
The April 21 episode fits the same pattern: Anthropic is trying to figure out how to price a product whose usage profile has changed substantially from what the original plans anticipated. The difference is that blocking unofficial API access in third-party tools is one thing. Quietly changing what a $20 subscription includes is another.
The Competitive Dimension
OpenAI’s CEO and employees posted responses that ranged from supportive to gleeful once the change went public. The competitive angle is straightforward: if Claude Code moves up to $100/month, OpenAI’s Codex (available at lower price points) looks more accessible by comparison.
The reversal makes it clear Anthropic wasn’t ready to make that move publicly. Whether a formal pricing change is coming for new subscribers at some point remains unclear, but the “A/B test” framing suggests the company is at least exploring it.
Existing Pro subscribers are currently unaffected. If Anthropic does adjust what’s included in the Pro plan for new signups, it has committed to announcing that directly rather than through a pricing page update.
