ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI's standalone AI browser, goes offline in six days. Users need to manually export their bookmarks and data before the cutoff. The browser capabilities are being folded into the ChatGPT desktop app and Codex.
OpenAI’s Atlas browser is shutting down on August 9, 2026 — less than a year after it launched in October 2025. If you’ve been using it, you have until then to manually export your bookmarks as an HTML file. None of your Atlas data transfers automatically to any other OpenAI product.
What’s happening
Atlas was positioned as a browser built specifically for AI-native workflows: browsing with ChatGPT built in, computer-use capabilities, and deep integration with OpenAI’s agent stack. It never reached broad adoption, and OpenAI cited prompt injection vulnerabilities and performance issues as ongoing problems.
The company is folding the useful parts into the ChatGPT desktop app. The updated desktop app gets multiple browser tabs, a password manager, download support, and improved navigation. OpenAI is also building a side-chat integration for Google Chrome, which lets you use ChatGPT alongside whatever browser you’re already in.
According to OpenAI’s James Sun, “All these capabilities were built on what we learned from Atlas users.” The Atlas team’s work is going into the desktop and Chrome experiences rather than a standalone browser product.
What developers should know
For developers using Codex, the browser-native agentic capabilities are consolidating there. Codex and the ChatGPT Work agent are both being bundled into the unified ChatGPT desktop app, which is where OpenAI is focusing its agentic desktop experience.
The practical change: if you had integrated Atlas into any workflow or documentation as a step, that breaks on August 9. The replacement isn’t a 1:1 swap — you’ll need to use the desktop app or the Chrome extension going forward.

- ChatGPT conversation history is stored separately in your ChatGPT account and is not affected
