GitHub Copilot for Jira is now generally available. It entered public preview in March 2026, and is now available to all eligible GitHub Copilot subscribers from the Atlassian Marketplace.

What It Does

The integration connects Copilot’s coding agent to Jira issues. You describe what you want done in a Jira ticket, Copilot’s agent runs, opens a pull request, and links it back to the ticket. The agent handles the implementation, you handle the review.

Two new capabilities shipped specifically for GA:

Streaming progress. Agent status now streams directly into the Jira issue in real time. You don’t need to switch to GitHub to see what the agent is working on. Status updates come through as it runs.

Post-session steering. After the agent finishes and opens a PR, you can continue giving instructions in the Jira chat panel. Follow-up requests refine the same PR rather than kicking off a new one. If the initial pass got something wrong or missed a requirement, you can correct it without starting over.

What Shipped During Preview

The preview period covered a lot of ground:

  • Model selection from within Jira
  • Confluence context via MCP, so the agent can draw on your team’s documentation
  • Custom agents and custom field support
  • Space-level custom guidance for team-specific conventions
  • Review request notifications appearing directly in Jira
  • Jira ticket references automatically added to pull request titles

The onboarding flow has also been simplified. Connecting GitHub organizations and repositories to Jira now takes fewer configuration steps than it did at preview launch.

Getting It

Install or update via the Atlassian Marketplace. Requires a GitHub Copilot plan with access to agent features. GitHub Business and Enterprise plans qualify; Pro+ on personal accounts also gets access.
