The 50% weekly usage boost for Claude Code expires August 31. The permanent change coming September 14 looks like a raise on paper but works out to a 17% reduction from today's levels.
If you’ve been running heavy Claude Code sessions this summer, today is the last day to take advantage of the extra headroom. The 50% boost to weekly usage limits — extended three times since its original July 13 expiration — officially expires tonight at 11:59 PM PT.
What comes next is where it gets complicated.
The announcement Anthropic had to rewrite
On August 29, Anthropic posted on the ClaudeDevs community that starting September 14, it would “permanently raise standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25%” for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. That framing is technically accurate, but it omits something important.
The 25% increase is measured against the original baseline — before the summer promotion. Current users are running at 150% of that baseline. A 25% raise from 100 lands at 125, which is a 17% reduction from 150.
After developers did the math publicly, Anthropic deleted the original post and reposted with clearer language: “Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits.”
The company added that it’s “working on exciting changes that will make it feel like you’re getting more from Claude,” without specifics on timing or what those changes are.
Who is affected
The temporary 50% boost covered Pro, Max, Team, and legacy seat-based Enterprise users across the CLI, IDE extensions, desktop, and web interfaces. Free plans and consumption-based Enterprise seats were excluded from the boost and are unaffected by the September 14 change.
Five-hour rolling rate limits — separate from weekly caps — were never part of the promotion and remain unchanged.
What this means in practice
Developers who built heavy workflows this summer should expect a real reduction in available capacity starting September 14. The permanent limits will still be higher than they were before the promotion started, but 17% lower than what most paid subscribers have now.
If you have context-heavy projects that have been sitting in the queue, the next two weeks through September 13 are the highest-capacity window you’ll have for a while. After that, the new baseline takes hold unless Anthropic adjusts again.
The summer promotion was always labeled temporary. What caught developers off guard was the framing of the subsequent change as a straightforward upgrade when the lived experience will be a step down.
