Anthropic announced a permanent 25% increase to Claude Code's baseline weekly limits starting September 14, but for everyone using it today, that's a net 17% reduction from current access levels.
Anthropic announced on August 29 that it will permanently raise Claude Code’s standard weekly limits by 25% starting September 14, replacing the temporary +50% promotional boost that has been in place since May. The catch: for anyone using Claude Code right now, the September 14 change is a net reduction of 17%.
The math is straightforward. If the baseline weekly limit is 100, the temporary promotion brought it to 150. The new permanent level lands at 125. Anyone measuring from today sees a drop of 25 units, which works out to 17% less access than they currently have.
Anthropic’s original post on X framed it as a gain, leading with the 25% permanent increase without mentioning that current users were getting more. The backlash was quick. Community members pointed out the framing was misleading, and Anthropic deleted the post. A follow-up clarified the situation directly: “Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code.”
Every paid plan is affected the same way. That includes Pro ($20/month), both Max tiers ($100 and $200), and seat-based Team and Enterprise plans.
Anthropic said it’s working on additional changes to give users more visibility and control over their usage, but has not announced specifics or a timeline. The +50% boost runs through September 13; the new permanent limits take effect on September 14.
