Anthropic is merging its Cowork agent into the main Claude chat and launching Docs and Slides in beta — a direct push into Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace workflows.
Anthropic wants Claude users to stop worrying about which Claude version should do the job. This week the company announced it is folding Claude Cowork into its standard chat experience and launching Claude Docs and Claude Slides — a push that moves Claude from answering questions toward owning the whole workflow, straight into territory Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace have held for decades.
The merge means research, multi-step work, document creation, and presentation building can happen in the same conversation, with Claude deciding which capabilities to deploy. The bigger change is not a redesigned interface: users will increasingly start with the job they need done and let Claude assemble the tools behind the scenes, instead of choosing a specialized Claude experience per task.
Docs and Slides arrive
Claude Docs and Claude Slides are entering beta for paid users. Docs lets users create and edit documents directly inside a Claude conversation; Slides can generate presentations that users edit, present, and download as PowerPoint or PDF. Documents can also be exported to Google Docs or Microsoft Word, and both are built for collaborative work, with shareable links so people can access and edit projects across desktop and mobile. Anthropic's own example shows the intended workflow: ask Claude to research a weekly report, write it in an established format, flag missed items, then turn the key points into a presentation — all in one conversation, so the slides can draw on the report's context.
The end of the "which Claude do I open" problem
Cowork started as a non-coding alternative to Claude Code, moved to the cloud in July after most usage proved non-technical, and gained August memory improvements that let context persist across chat and Cowork. The merger is the logical endpoint. Claude Design, previously a standalone visual tool, now operates inside any conversation. Existing Cowork users should not have to rebuild their setups: Anthropic says chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills transfer over intact.
The rollout starts with Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks. Team and Free plans follow, while Enterprise administrators get at least 30 days' notice before the changes reach their organizations — the IT governance story matters here. Anthropic says Claude asks before taking an action by default, with an optional setting that lets it keep working and check in only when something requires attention. For IT teams evaluating the new workspace, the questions to press are connector permissions, what information Claude can reach through them, and how much autonomy users are allowed to grant.
The broader workspace land grab
The competitive pressure is unmistakable. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July 2026, combining its chatbot with stronger agentic features, and Reuters noted the parallel in its coverage: both companies are chasing enterprise customers and non-technical professionals who want AI to handle real output without switching apps. Fortune framed Anthropic's move as part of a drive toward an AI superapp — one place where casual chat evolves into serious work.
For developers, the interesting read is where Anthropic is not: this is not a coding announcement. A year ago Anthropic transformed from a research lab into a company with genuine enterprise distribution on the back of Claude Code and MCP. Now it is spending that distribution on knowledge workers — documents, slides, designs — using the same platform playbook: plugins, portable file-based configuration, MCP connectors. Coding was the beachhead. The office workflow is the territory.
